Open PhD positions in my group
Prof. Aditya Ramamoorthy’s group at Iowa State University has openings for multiple Ph.D. students starting in Spring 2020 and Fall 2020. Areas of research will broadly include machine learning and coding theory. Specific examples include algorithms for distributed machine learning and coding for distributed computing. Interested students should examine recent papers available at his webpage and contact him via email at adityar@iastate.edu (please attach a detailed CV).
Iowa State University is located in the town of Ames, Iowa is a large Midwestern university with a scenic campus. Ames is a safe college town with a low cost of living and has a diverse population with people from across the world. Iowa State has traditionally been a strong engineering school. The ECE department was ranked 37 in the latest US News graduate school rankings.
Aditya wins the Boast-Nilsson Educational Impact Award
Aditya received the 2019-2020 Boast-Nilsson Educational Impact award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The citations reads:- “In recognition of exemplary contributions in curriculum, instruction, and educational research leading to generational impact on the education of graduate and undergraduate students”.

Aditya visited and presented a seminar at the Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor titled: “Leveraging Coding for Distributed Computing”.
Hooshang defends his Ph. D. and starts a position in Qualcomm
Hooshang Ghasemi recently defended his Ph. D. thesis. He has started working at Qualcomm in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is the recipient of a Research Excellence Award from Iowa State University. Congratulations Hooshang!
New NSF award titled “Leveraging coding techniques for distributed computing”
The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds our work on coding theoretic ideas for distributed computation. The award is titled: “CIF:Small:Leveraging coding techniques for distributed computing”. NSF’s support is gratefully acknowledged.
Kostas wins the best poster award at MMLS 2019
Kostas (Konstantinos Konstantinidis) won the first prize in the Student Poster contest at the Midwest Machine Learning Symposium (MMLS) 2019. His poster abstract was titled: “Speeding up Distributed Computing through Coding”. Out of the 80 accepted posters, eight were chosen as finalists. Posters were judged based on a 3-minute spotlight talk, abstract, and the discussion at the poster session. The award comes with a $1000 cash prize. Congratulations!
Research Excellence and Teaching Excellence Awards
Hooshang is a winner of the ISU Research Excellence Award and Kostas is a winner of the ISU Teaching Excellence Award. Congratulations to both for well deserved recognitions!
Multiple papers will be presented at ISIT 2019
Multiple papers from our group will be presented at IEEE ISIT 2019. Details are available from the Publications page.
New paper on distributed matrix multiplication
A paper titled “Erasure coding for distributed matrix multiplication for matrices with bounded entries” has appeared in the IEEE Communication Letters in Jan. 2019. Congratulations Li and Kostas.
