Title: Deep Reinforcement Learning-based Control in Power Distribution Systems

Abstract: Most of the existing control algorithms in power distribution systems are physical model-based. However, it is extremely difficult for regional electric utilities to maintain a completely reliable physical network model, which covers millions of nodes. In this talk, I will introduce our latest work on developing model-free deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms to solve distribution system control problems such as Volt-VAR control and network reconfiguration. I will present the development of safe, sample efficient, robust, and multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithms to address the specific challenges associated with realizing data-driven control in critical infrastructure systems such as power distribution system.

Bio: Dr. Nanpeng Yu received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2006. Dr. Yu also received his M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics and Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 2010. Before joining University of California, Riverside, Dr. Yu was a senior power system planner and project manager at Southern California Edison from Jan 2011 to July 2014. Currently, he is an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. Dr. Yu is the recipient of the Regents Faculty Fellowship and Regents Faculty Development award from University of California. He received multiple best paper awards form IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, IEEE Power and Energy Society Grand International Conference and Exposition Asia and the Second International Conference on Green Communications, Computing and Technologies. Dr. Yu is the director of Energy, Economics, and Environment Research Center at UC Riverside. Dr. Yu is also a cooperating faculty member of department of computer science and engineering, department of Statistics and Center for Environmental Research & Technology. He currently serves as the vice chair of distribution system operation and planning subcommittee of IEEE Power and Energy Society. Dr. Yu serves as the associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy, and IEEE Power Engineering Letters.
