Title: Online Oscillation Management at ISO New England

Abstract: Sustained poorly damped natural and forced oscillations represent a threat to power systems including the mechanical vibration of equipment, potential instability and/or uncontrolled outages and the threat to human life in the worst case. Overwhelming majority of actually observed poorly damped oscillations are caused by generators and mainly by the equipment and control system failures and atypical operating conditions. The only efficient way to mitigate such oscillations is to identify and eliminate the primary cause of oscillations. The discussion is focused on ISO New England practices on how to monitor oscillations and how to identify the source of sustained oscillations by using PMU measurements.

Bio: Slava Maslennikov received the M.S., Ph.D.  and Dr. of Sciences degrees all in power systems from the St. Petersburg Technical University (former Leningrad Polytechnic Institute), St. Petersburg, Russia in 1979, 1984 and 1998, respectively. Dr. Maslennikov has joined the ISO New England in 2006 and he is currently a Technical Manager in the Advanced Technology Solutions department.  His work is focused on the research and development related to creation and implementation of new technologies and processes increasing the efficiency and reliability of power systems.
