Title: New Tools & Concepts for RTO Long-Term Planning

Abstract: The US is in the midst of the most costly infrastructure changeover ever, retiring fossil-fueled resources, building new renewables, expanding distribution, making major transmission investments, while electrifying the transportation sector. Central and essential players to this changeover are the Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs), as a result of their socio-techno-economic long-term planning processes they coordinate among a large and diverse number of stakeholders. These processes have continued to advance over the past decade. In this talk, we focus on two recently developed tools: adaptive coordinated expansion planning (ACEP) and folding horizon simulation (FHS), incredibly useful for RTO long-term planning, as they enable exploration of the future in terms of scenarios, planned investments, costs, and benefits.

Bio: James McCalley received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Georgia Tech in 1982, 1986, and 1992, respectively. He was employed with the Atlanta Gas Light-Company from 1977-1982 and with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), San Francisco, from 1985 to 1990. He is an Anson Marston Distinguished Professor and the London Professor of Power Systems Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Iowa State University where he has been employed since 1992. His research and instructional activities all revolve around electric power systems, with emphasis on long-term planning, transmission, power system dynamics, electricity markets, and renewable integration. He was elected as an IEEE Fellow in 2003. He was a registered professional engineer in California.
