Title: Utilization of T&D Interactions for Improving Voltage Performance of the Power Grid under High DER Penetration

Abstract: Integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the grid bring many challenges and opportunities. The talk will discuss the influence of transmission and distribution (T&D) interactions on voltage stability and utilization of DERs for bulk power grid voltage performance improvement. It will discuss the importance of modeling the distribution systems for voltage stability margin assessment. The talk also provides broad details of a multi-timescale T&D co-simulation tool developed to capture T&D interactions accurately. It is important to research the role of T&D interactions under fast changing grid with increasing penetration of DERs. The talk will also share the challenges of high DER penetration scenarios in rural distribution feeders and utilization of inverter-based resources (IBR) for voltage regulation. It will also discuss an aggregator framework to coordinate and utilize the distribution system assets for improving the system performance.

Bio: Alok Kumar Bharati received master’s degree in power electronics and power systems from the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad in 2011 after completing bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronics engineering in 2009 from Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), India. He worked with GE from 2011-2017 in R&D of low-voltage switchgear design and is an inventor on 2 US patents that resulted from this work. Currently, he is working toward the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering at Iowa State University, Ames, IA, USA since 2017 under the guidance of Dr. Venkataramana Ajjarapu.
