Processing (CSP) Seminar
Time: 2-3 Thursdays, Location:

Talk Schedule,
List of topics/papers
for student talks
We will try to have at least half the talks on Bio-Signal
Processing, the
rest will be on other CSP topics. Also, we will try to have as many
student talks as possible.
Bio-Signal
Processing: There
are a
very
large number of applications in bioengineering (includes medical image
analysis, disease classification, bioinformatics, ...) that use
very standard tools from signal processing, statistics and systems
theory, while there are many other problems which have lead to the
development of new tools. We will
focus on application of estimation
and detection methods for this semester. The goal will be to
understand
both the method and the problem formulation of the application. Some
of the very commonly used tools and their applications are:
- Binary and multiple hypothesis testing (also called
classification or pattern recognition): disease
detection, protein sequence classification, change
detection in time sequences
- Least
Squares Estimation and Tracking
- MMSE: registering
multiple imaging modalities (MRI, CT, ultrasound etc) or in parameter
estimation for any time series model
- Tracking: tracking the boundary of different "regions of
interest" in the heart, or in sequential segmentation of volume images
- EM (Expectation Maximization), Alternating Minimization &
Monte Carlo methods
- EM: image segmentation or other clustering problems
- Alternating
Minimization or Projection on Convex Sets or Blahut-Arimoto's algorithm
or
Iterated Conditional Mode (ICM): useful when conditioned on one set of
variables variables, the rest of the minimization problem is convex.
Example: find the object and background intensities
and the object boundary contour that minimize a certain energy
functional, e.g. Chan-Vese
- Monte Carlo
methods, e.g. MCMC or Annealing: used for optimization whenever
there are multiple extremas
- Other examples: EEG/ MEG signal analysis for estimating brain's
neuronal activity, fMRI analysis, Mutual
information for image registration, ...
